Why Buy Used?

Why buy a Used Car?

NY Daily News shared six smart reasons of why you should buy a used car. Would you add anything to the list?

1. It will save you money. In fact, according to the article, you will spend $13,500 less by choosing a used car over an average new car. Plus, new cars depreciate quickly. Once a new car is driven, it is considered a used car. Once a new car becomes a used car, it is worth far less, even thousands less. There are exceptions, such as the Toyota FJ Cruiser which are worth a greater percentage of their original value.

2. Used Cars are reliable. Because today's trucks, vans, and SUVs last longer, the average car driving on American roads have reached 11.5 years. Modern vehicles are made to last longer so you can save thousands of dollars on a car that can be reliable for years to come.

3. CPO Programs. More vehicle buyers are leasing and buyers have lower payments. Most leases are for three years, although there are several restrictions for leasing. "When the lease term is up, the car is returned, and the returned vehicle must find a home. Typically, that car's new home is the dealership's certified pre-owned (CPO) lot."

4. Vehicle History Reports. Access to Vehicle History Reports add peace of mind for the consumer, even if every single concern is not caught. The two biggest and well-known providers of Vehicle History Reports are Carfax and AutoCheck. Using the VIN number, a customer can access the following: Previous Owners, Previous Registration Status, Mileage Confirmation, and more.

5. Favorable Financing Rates and Terms. Low rates mean that automakers can offer attractive financing for their CPO vehicles.

6. Drive a "Better" Car. Driving a used car means more possibilities and more options to choose from. It may include high-technology, leather seats, additional packaging, but for thousands less than a new car.

Although purchasing a used car is risky due to vehicle where-a-bouts and treatment, and no guarantees that there will not be any issues, the list above shows that purchasing a used car can be worth the risk. With today's vehicles lasting longer, vehicle history reports being readily available, and CPO programs offering a nominal guarantee, the used car approach can be the best way to go.
